What is individual BAH rate protection?
DTMO states that individual rate protection prevents a member from receiving a lower BAH rate than the previous year while the member's BAH eligibility status remains unchanged. An eligible member receives the BAH rate published January 1 or the housing allowance received December 31, whichever is larger.

What changes can end or change BAH rate protection?
DTMO lists a permanent change of station, a reduction in pay grade, and a change in dependency status as status changes that end or change individual rate protection. A finance office must determine how the rule applies to a member's record.

Does BAH rate protection begin after arrival at a new duty station?
DTMO states that rate protection applies after a service member arrives at a new duty station. If eligibility status remains the same, the member receives a published increase but not a published decrease. The actual entitlement date and duty-location record are finance determinations.

How does the historical BAH option work on MyLES?
After the user selects the year protected eligibility began, MyLES compares official DTMO BAH rows for the same MHA, pay grade, and dependency status from that year through the active year. It applies the highest loaded amount. If any required year is missing, it keeps current BAH and displays a warning rather than estimating a protected rate.

Why does the calculator ask for a protection start year?
The start year identifies which official annual BAH rows MyLES should compare. The tables cannot show a PCS, pay-grade reduction, dependency-status change, or other pay-account event, so using the historical option assumes BAH eligibility remained unchanged from that year. It is a planning assumption, not an entitlement certification; a finance office must determine actual eligibility.

When should I use the finance-confirmed manual BAH option?
Use it when the servicing finance office or LES provides a protected monthly BAH amount that the historical-table method cannot establish. MyLES compares that entered amount with current BAH and uses the larger amount. The entry does not create entitlement; it records an amount already confirmed through an official pay source.

Does the number of dependents change the BAH rate?
DTMO states that BAH distinguishes between with-dependents and without-dependents status, not the number of dependents. MyLES uses that same two-status distinction for BAH table matching.

Does BAH reimburse my exact rent and utilities?
No. BAH is a locality, pay-grade, and dependency-status allowance. DTMO notes that actual out-of-pocket housing expense can be higher or lower than the prescribed rate based on the member's housing choice.
